When it comes to isometric action RPGs that are brimming with content, Path of Exile and Diablo have ruled the roost over the last decade or so. However, across that same time period, a pixelated indie rival has also been cruising along in the background, dishing up dozens of seasons of content and even undergoing a transformational 2.0 upgrade a couple of years back. I’m talking about Hero Siege, and with the release of its latest seasonal update, it’s just set a new Steam player count record.
Hero Siege is a frantic but strategic spin on the action RPG formula, allowing you to blast through several Acts of content, each with roguelike-style procedurally generated levels, a huge array of enemy types and variants, and hundreds of loot items to find and utilize. There are a grand total of 22 classes in the game right now, but it’s worth noting that the majority of these are paid DLC classes. Samurai, Necromancers, Pirates, Demonspawns, and more can be brought into battle. It’s a great co-op game too, with parties of up to four players supported.
While it’s always delivered new seasons of content across its long history, its 2.0 evolution brought it more in line with the live service structure we see in Diablo 4 these days. There are seasonal characters that you can start fresh with every time an update arrives, and these convert into legacy characters once a season ends. Seasons last around two months now, so things move pretty fast.
Today, Season 6 of the 2.0 era arrives, bringing with it a new ultra-hard difficulty, a Blood Pact feature that lets you and your most dedicated Hero Siege pals create a special type of private guild using dedicated characters, and a rework to its Chaos Tower zone.
As with all live service games, every new season sees a spike in players, but the scale of the changes being made in Season 6 have really drawn in the crowds. Today has seen Hero Siege hit a peak concurrent player count on Steam of 7,136, which is a new record for the game. The previous record was achieved back in 2022 and was just over 5,000 players, so this is a pretty big jump.
It’s even more extraordinary when you think Hero Siege has been around for 11 years, and that at the time of writing, more people are playing it than Diablo 4 on Steam right now. Admittedly, that fact won’t remain true for long, but it’s a pretty cool moment for the small team at Panic Art Studios.
Hero Siege Season 6 is live right now. It’s a good time to dive in or scoop up some new classes too, because the base game and all of its DLC add-ons are 80% off until Thursday, March 20. That means you can start playing Hero Siege for as little as $1.59 / £1.33. You can grab it for yourself or learn more about it here.
