It doesn’t take long in Baldur’s Gate 3 to find out that the Grand Duke, Wyll’s father, was kidnapped. Although you find this out early on in the game, you’ll need to wait until Act Three to find his whereabouts. It’s tough to know where to start if you don’t discover the right quests and clues. Let’s go over how to rescue the Grand Duke in Baldur’s Gate 3.
Baldur’s Gate 3: How to save the Grand Duke
The Grand Duke isn’t just in some goblin camp that you can raid in a few combat rounds. Gortash imprisoned Wyll’s father in the Iron Throne underwater. How you can rescue the Grand Duke in Baldur’s Gate 3 is by breaking into Flymm Cargo and finding the Submersible.
How to get to the Iron Throne
The Iron Throne is a prison deep underwater, and the only way to access this prison is by sneaking in through Flymm Cargo, or the City Sewers. Flymm Cargo is a much easier way of accessing the Submersible, so we’re going to focus on that entrance.
As a side note, if you decided to convince Wyll to save himself and break his contract with Mizora at the expense of his father’s life, you can still save the Duke. You still have time to save him if you head to the Iron Throne. Also, if you decided to disable the Steel Watch Foundry, you’ll eventually make your way to the Iron Throne during that quest. There are quite a few hostages in the Iron Throne, some who are family members of Gondian slaves working at the Foundry.
So, once you break into any of Flymm Cargo’s doors, you’ll have to fight a few stray monsters. Take them down, and on the floor of this building you should see a hatch. Crates and barrels are covering it. Interact with the hatch, and you’ll find yourself underground, and if you keep heading south, you’ll find the room with the Submersible. Talk to Redhammer the Deviser and convince him to let you head to the Iron Throne.
As you arrive at the Iron Throne, you’ll soon realize you only have eight rounds to save as many hostages as you can. This is because Gortash catches you, and radios into the Submersible telling you he rigged it to explode. You’ll even hear Omeluum’s voice in your head, if you remember him from Act Two. Gondian hostages, Omeluum, and the Grand Duke are all imprisoned in the Iron Throne.
How to rescue the Grand Duke
Not only will you have to unlock as many cells as you can, but you have to fight off many Sahuagins. These are ferocious sea creatures that will continuously spawn over the course of the eight rounds. You can check your map for the Grand Duke’s exact location, which is on the eastern side of the Iron Throne. For now, that’s your primary target to save, but you should save others as well.
I highly recommend coming into this combat with spells that make you faster like Expeditious Retreat or Longstrider, or even Potions of Speed. Eight rounds isn’t as long as you’d think, you need to run to the cells as fast as possible and fight back against Sahuagins.
Once you make it to the Grand Duke’s cellar, interact with the lever, and the door will open. He’ll now temporarily join your party and you can control him on his turns. If you’re like me and decided to have Wyll save himself over his father, something interesting will happen. As soon as you step out of your cell, Mizora will make an appearance. She’ll then summon a bunch of explosive spiders in retaliation.
Wyll’s father is already pretty low on health, so to avoid him dying, cast a healing spell on him as soon as you let him out. Make the Grand Duke Dash back to the Submersible. Once he and everyone else you can save returns in time, you’ll all escape before the Iron Throne explodes. The Grand Duke is now safe and sound, and he’ll head to your camp.
