Throughout Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, there will be ample opportunities to talk to and negotiate with demons. If successful, you’ll recruit them into your party and have them fight alongside you. During the early stages of the game, you’ll only have a weaker assortment of demons, but some are much better than others. Here are the best early-game demons to obtain in SMTV: Vengeance:

  • Turdak
  • Angel (Fusion)
  • Neko Shogun (Fusion)
  • Ippon-Datara
  • Mermaid
  • Aitvaras
  • Fortuna (Fusion)
  • Archangel (Fusion)

If you’re looking for demons that can deal a significant amount of Physical damage, try Turdak. They have a strength of 15 which helps with Physical attacks like Critical Slash and Gram Slice. Angel is obtainable through Demon Fusion at level 10 as has a high Magic stat. They have some incredible healing abilities like Recarm and Humble Blessing, alongside their skills that deal Light damage.

Neko Shogun is also through Demon Fusion at level 5, but once leveled up they can be used to debuff enemies with skills like Rakunda and Sukunda. Ippon-Datara is a higher-level demon for the early game who has an incredibly high Vitality of 20. They also can buff allies with Tarukaja (raises their ATK) and Taunt enemies to raise their chances of being targeted.

Mermaid focuses on higher Magic and Luck stats as she comes with debuffs like Marin Karin and Dormina to inflict status ailments on enemies. She also has a wild ability called Stormcaller Song that can deal 3-6 weak Ice attacks to random foes. Then there’s Aitvaras who is another strong early-game demon with high scores in Luck, Agility, and Magic. Aitvaras can buff themself with Concentrate to increase the damage of their next Magic-based attack.

Two other great early-game demons come from Demon Fusion. Fortuna is focused on healing and buffing the party and has incredibly high Magic and Luck. They have an amazing ability called Life Spring which can increase max HP. Finally, Archangel is pretty powerful as well with pretty balanced stats and their highest stat being Agility at 18. They can deal Medium Fire attacks with Agilao, and use Taruna to debuff enemy attacks.

Once you make it to the mid game of Shin Megami Tensei V: Vengeance, you have a larger array of powerful demons to play with. We’ll narrow it down to make it easier to figure out which demons are best for this section of SMTV: Vengeance.

  • Jack Frost
  • Hell-Biker
  • Kaya-no-Hime
  • Berith
  • Horus (Fusion)
  • Daisoujou
  • Mothman
  • Anubis (Fusion)

First off, Jack Frost excels in Magic and has a few great ice attacks such as Jack Bufala (Medium Ice attack and lowers target’s Defense) and Ice Breath (weak 2-5 Ice attacks to random foes). Hell-Biker is balanced in stats but has a much higher Agility. Their Great Life Spring skill can greatly increase max HP, and they buff their Fire attack damage, alongside dealing Heavy Physical attacks to all foes with Hell Spin.

Kaya-no-Hime is most interesting with their high Magic stat and Harvest Dance ability which grants low Hp recovery to an ally and raises their Defense. Berith has a pretty high Strength of 26 while also having unique skills like Bloody Glee (increases Crit Rate) and Pierce Armor (Weak Physical attack and lowers target’s Defense).
