All those that dive into Lucky Tower Ultimate will have fun storming this castle with a smile on their face. While it may take a while to get the hang of things, those that prepare to die should also prepare to laugh as well.
Roguelikes are all the rage these days, but roguelikes with a sense of humor? Those are rarer than a perfect run!
Enter Studio Seufz and AMC Games’ Lucky Tower Ultimate, a roguelike that’s equal parts danger and slapstick. Featuring plenty of challenge and jokes in equal measure, is this title more of a princess or a frog?
Things in Lucky Tower Ultimate start out with crap luck. After nature called for our wayward hero, he ends up being teleported to a tower in what amounts to the ultimate prank. Armed with nothing but his heart-printed boxers and charming wit, he ventures forth to find a way out.
Seems like a simple premise, right? However, the devil is most certainly in the details – and the aptly named Evelius.
Death is always imminent in Lucky Tower Ultimate, and players will never know what’s next in store. One door might have players freeing an all-too eager prisoner, while another might have an anvil trap worthy of Looney Tunes’ ACME legend Wile E. Coyote.
Lucky Tower Ultimate manages to be fun and funny as players end up storming the castle. Those with a penchant for dad jokes and slapstick comedy – or even grew up watching Adult Swim when their parents weren’t looking – will have an absolute blast.
Gameplay in Lucky Tower Ultimate has been designed to be straightforward and easy to understand all the same. Players can equip and throw items, collect currency, and give players commands as they progress; there’s even context bubbles to streamline things. One can also net themselves some shiny things by looting both friend and foe, but don’t expect anything too overly complex.
While this title is less about “getting gud” and more about going with the flow, Lucky Tower Ultimate encourages skill and experimentation all the same. Whether one chooses to equip that treasure chest item, go all Monty Hall with their door choices or insults, or find the best way to enlist their newly freed friends, there’s always something to keep in mind as players progress.
On that note, Lucky Tower Ultimate is a roguelike at its core. And when it comes to roguelikes, there also comes trial and error.
Those looking for a straightforward path out of this tower will be out of time; while the hero can take a few hits, death is swift and the title screen is all too ready to greet players once more.
Starting out, our average runs in Lucky Tower Ultimate were a few minutes a pop as we got the hang of things. We’re veterans of Hades and the Basement, so we were nonplussed when it came to these multiple runs. However, those looking for a straight shot will be thrown for a loop – albeit grining ear-to-ear.
All those that dive into Lucky Tower Ultimate will have fun storming this castle with a smile on their face. While it may take a while to get the hang of things, those that prepare to die should also prepare to laugh as well.
