While we already knew that another new Destiny 2 dungeon will arrive with the start of its next episode, Heresy, in a few weeks time, very little else was known about it. Today though, Bungie revealed its name, location, and (for me) the most important detail of all: the world’s first dungeon race is returning after its success at the launch of Vesper’s Host.

Vesper’s Host is a great dungeon, but Bungie’s decision to kick off its release with a world’s first race made it feel even better. Previously reserved just for the release of new raids, Destiny 2 world’s first races make up some of my favorite gaming memories over the years, and extending it to a dungeon that ended up being more difficult than some raids was a great move. It was so well received that Bungie is going to bring it back for the release of the new Heresy dungeon, Sundered Doctrine.

Yes, we’ve got a name! There are no screenshots or trailers just yet, but what we do know is that it will require us to “travel to Savathun’s Throne World and infiltrate Rhulk’s Pyramid Ship.” This of course was the setting for the FPS game‘s Vow of the Disciple raid where the Guardian killed Rhulk, so that ship has been lying dormant ever since. Whatever’s happened in there, or whoever has gotten into it, clearly needs sorting out.

We know that Heresy will be the final chapter in Destiny’s decade-long Light and Darkness saga and sets up a whole new saga that’ll be explored in its next expansion, which is currently codenamed Apollo. Bungie has said that with its three Episodes this year (Echoes, Revenant, and Heresy) it wants to tie up all the loose ends of the Light and Darkness era, and if there’s one really big loose end that’s still dangling, it’s the Hive god Xivu Arath. This is purely speculative at the moment, but Heresy, what with its confirmed Hive theme, seems ripe for a Xivu appearance – potentially in the Sundered Doctrine dungeon.

Anyway, back to the dungeon race itself. Bungie has confirmed that, like with Vesper’s Host, the challenging Contest Mode will be live for the first 48 hours. Normal difficulty mode will be available once the dungeon has been cleared by the winner of the Sundered Doctrine race.

However, there is a twist this time around. While raid and dungeon races have previously awarded podium positions for the first three teams to complete the activity, Bungie is doing away with that this year and will just crown the winner. No prizes for coming second (or third) in this race. To make that number one spot feel even more special, Bungie is going to dish out an actual trophy, which it says it will reveal in the build up to Heresy’s launch.

The new Destiny 2 dungeon, Sundered Doctrine, goes live on Friday, February 7. The dungeon race begins as soon as it drops at 9am PT / 12pm ET / 5pm GMT.
