Jumping on the crossover bandwagon as a live service game can go one of two ways. You can either churn out a poorly-priced, mediocre collab that doesn’t exactly align with your style and aesthetics. Or, you can bring players a collab so irresistible that nothing else really matters. Destiny 2’s next crossover certainly leans towards the latter, because a lineup of Star Wars themed armor sets and cosmetics are hitting the space shooter soon.

Destiny 2 has been experiencing a post-Final Shape hangover for a little while now. This year of content was always going to be a bridge between the old Light and Darkness saga and the new vision for the FPS game, and while there have been some moments of promising experimentation, there’s no escaping the fact that the first two Episodes have underwhelmed. However, with Heresy – the third and final Episode before the new Frontiers era – it’s got a chance at redemption. There’ll no doubt be some interesting revelations as the final loose ends of the old saga are tied up and new storylines are established.

In today’s developer livestream previewing Heresy, there was lots to get excited about. There are two new Exotic weapons, including a striking Strand submachine gun that looks like an ornate fossil. There’s the reveal that the previously dead Oryx, The Taken King, is back in some capacity. And there’s a brand new dungeon. However, despite a decent lineup of Heresy content, this Star Wars collab stole the show for me.

On surprise factor alone, it blew me away. While a Star Wars crossover with a space game like Destiny 2 makes a load of sense, it’s not one I ever expected or anticipated. For the most part, Bungie’s crossovers have involved other videogame IP like Assassin’s Creed, Mass Effect, or The Witcher, so a Star Wars one (that I hadn’t seen leaked anywhere either) really did come as a shock.

Typically, Destiny 2 crossovers feature armor sets inspired by iconic figures from other IP, but in the Star Wars collab Bungie is straight up depicting various troopers. While the Warlock set, which is inspired by the menacing red Imperial Royal Guards, does retain some of its Destiny-ness, the armor sets for Hunters and Titans are basically carbon copies of death troopers and stormtroopers, respectively. There are going to be some that love the idea of running around and popping abilities as an actual stormtrooper. But I think others will worry that Destiny crossovers could start to lose their identity and become more like what we see in Fortnite – direct depictions of characters outside of Bungie’s universe.

I’m on the fence at the moment, but there’s no denying that all three skins look superb (and they’re probably going to sell rather well too, if I was going to hedge my bets). Alongside these armor sets you’ll also find a Ghost shell inspired by the Death Star (complete with laser beam effect), a sparrow, a ship, and some emotes.

The Destiny 2 Star Wars collaboration hits the Eververse store at the beginning of Heresy on Tuesday, February 4.
