Much as I enjoy fighting through the underworld in Hades or battling demons in Diablo’s Sanctuary, I’m more of a sci-fi fan at heart. The spacefaring survival of Reality Break appeals to me that much more, flying through interplanetary space stations and battling with lasers and forcefields. Thankfully, this flashy ARPG is out now on Steam for anyone who feels similarly.
Reality Break‘s title refers to your central ability in the action-RPG: the power to change reality in any number of ways. As a spaceship-flying mercenary, the ‘Rewrite’ mechanic comes in very handy, not least when you’re targeted by a group who seem to know about your strange new technique, and are dedicated to stopping you using it.
Thus begins a quest across the cosmos, played out entirely in your spacecraft across planets, space stations, asteroid fields, and whatever else you find among the stars. The space game‘s launch trailer shows a mix of puzzles, dogfights, and other precarious scenarios against numerous different backgrounds.
Your Rewrite capability lets you alter parts and equipment to suit your ship, as well as tinker with reality around you by making countdowns longer or affecting the overall difficulty. It’s ill-defined from the outset, so you can discover the full extent of what it can and can’t do for yourself.

A voiceover in the trailer asks the protagonist to save them, hinting at the deeper narrative. But much like Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, or Baldur’s Gate 3, what matters is how satisfying the new PC game is to play, and Reality Break looks strong in that department.
Your ship is a small, tactile vehicle that can slip around quickly to out-maneuver many a threat. Likewise, traps can be avoided by slipping through the cracks. Some encounters against bigger ships require some smarter thinking, but that’s where smart use of equipment and clever deployment of the Rewrite come in.
It’s the third release from solo developer Courtney Liessen, better known as Element Games, following on from Evil Robot Traffic Jam and Sky Cannoneer. This is certainly Liessen’s most ambitious project to date, and an auspicious sign for her ambitions going forward.
Reality Break is out on Steam now. You can grab it with an introductory discount of 10%, which is only sticking around until Monday, February 24. To add it to your library, or learn more about it, head to its Steam page here.
