If you are anything like me, you wish far more games would learn lessons from Silent Hill and Resident Evil. These classics still hold up, not just as tightly constructed video games, but as major works of art in their own right. Silent Hill 2’s descent into purgatory is unforgettable and Resident Evil’s mansion is still one of the most satisfying and intricate puzzles in gaming. Luckily, retro survival horror is in the middle of a major revival. Upcoming game Heartworm looks to expand the still-incredible genre’s legacy, albeit with a camera rather than a pistol and flashlight, and you can try it right now.
The game got a new trailer and a release window as part of a horror showcase at IGN Fan Fest. Like its inspirations, Heartworm looks gorgeous, using light, shadow, and reflection to build a unique, melancholy mood. It follows Sam, a young woman grieving her grandfather who discovers a portal to another world. Similar to James Sutherland and Heather Mason, Sam feels a calling to a mysterious place that reflects her own hang-ups and fears. However, the game also brings in new ideas. In addition to its Silent Hill and Resident Evil inspiration, Heartworm brings in elements of the often underrated Fatal Frame. Like the heroes of that survival horror franchise, Sam photographs the ghosts and creatures she encounters.
Now, if you like the vibes of retro survival horror games, but blanch at tank controls, don’t fear. Heartworm lets you toggle between classic and modern controls. You can also alter the game’s appearance with filters and retro effects if you want a truly classic look. Heartworm is not stuck in the past, but seeks to evolve, respect, and learn from its influences.
Heartworm will launch sometime in Spring 2025, with an exact date TBA. You can check out the Heartworm demo on Steam right now.
