Slaying grotesque enemies, achingly beautiful and powerful melee weapons, and dark fantasy worlds – just some of the core ingredients for any good FromSoftware RPG. But what if Dark Souls went first-person, picked up the pace a bit, and incorporated flashes of Doom’s hellish, metal aesthetic? Well, you’d get something that looks a lot like Voin. Made by a single developer, this already ambitious RPG just got even bigger and better with its first major content update that adds a new dungeon and fresh foes to the game.

Voin dropped in early access at the tail end of last year, but solo developer Nikita Sozidar has already dropped a big update that added a new difficulty level, among other useful quality of life features. However, it pales in comparison to the Thunderborn update that has gone live in the RPG today.

The headline addition is the brand new dungeon area beneath the Cathedral of Veiled Lament. With eerie corridors, waterfalls, and cathedral spires hanging upside down above you, it looks like an awesome new location. Buried within is a new boss for you to take on – Nomme, The Summoner of Tears. Nomme guards Hadracon’s Scroll, an item required to unlock Hadracon’s Citadel, so now it’s much harder to reach this location as you’ve got to slay the new boss first.

Inside the dungeon you’ll also find five new enemy types, including a resurrected skeletal soldier, a stomping titan made of fire and ash, and a huge mutant beast with a lethal set of swiping claws.

You’ll also come across the Circle of the Damned, a new arena challenge that throws hordes of enemies your way. Clearing the Circle of the Damned will land you an epic reward – “a weapon so powerful it tears through reality itself.” Very nice.

The Thunderborn update for Voin is live right now and free for all players. If you don’t yet own Voin, it’s also 20% off until Thursday, March 20. To read the full patch notes, learn more about the game, or add it to your Steam library, head to its store page here.
