Hogwarts Legacy has numerous gear pieces that you can acquire. As you’re leveling up and progressing further in the campaign, a lot of them will no longer be of use. However, once you’ve got some really good stuff, you might want to boost them further. Here’s our guide to help you upgrade your gear and add traits in Hogwarts Legacy using a device called the Enchanted Loom.

Hogwarts Legacy guide – How to upgrade gear and add traits to items
To upgrade gear and add traits in Hogwarts Legacy, you’ll need to complete a quest called The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom. You should receive it halfway through the campaign. Here are the quest requirements to unlock it:
- Helm of Urtkot – You’ll enter a tomb to find a unique helmet for a goblin.
- The Caretaker’s Lunar Lament – Help Gladwin Moon with his predicament to learn Alohomora, allowing you to unlock doors and chests.
- Beast Class – This fairly short quest serves as your introduction to this mechanic. You’ll learn how to pet creatures and give them treats.
Once you’re finished with those, you’ll get The Elf, the Nab-Sack, and the Loom. Again, your tasks are fairly straightforward. You’ll capture different beasts using the Nab-Sack and bring them to your Vivarium in the Room of Requirement. After ensuring that the animals are chill and cozy, the house elf Deek will give you the blueprint for the Enchanted Loom.
Using the Enchanted Loom
The Enchanted Loom is the device used to upgrade gear and add traits in Hogwarts Legacy. It costs only 8x Moonstones, so go ahead and plop it down. It’s got a couple of functions:
- Upgrade Gear (right-click) – Each equippable item will either have Offense or Defense as a bonus stat roll. The first upgrade has a relatively low cost (i.e., 3x Jobberknoll Feather or 3x Mooncalf Fur). Subsequent upgrades, meanwhile, require additional materials from other animals.
- Add Trait (F) – Assuming you already have the necessary materials, you can affix a type of trait to a gear piece. Since you’ve just unlocked this mechanic, it’s likely that the only perk you can use is Scorching I. It increases your damage with Incendio and requires 1x Puffskin Fur.
From here, you’ll want to continue taming various Beast-type creatures that you find in the game world. Then, you should feed and pet them back in your Vivarium. As long as they’re satisfied, they’ll produce additional materials. These can be used to further facilitate the Hogwarts Legacy gear upgrade and traits functions via the Enchanted Loom.
Hogwarts Legacy is available via Steam.
