While Battlefield’s reputation took a blow with the disastrous launch of 2042, there’s no denying the FPS series has produced some exceptional games. Battlefield 3 remains the pinnacle of the series, in my eyes, but right behind it is Battlefield 1. Now you can pick up this brilliant WW1 shooter for its lowest ever price on Steam – so low, it’s probably cheaper than your morning coffee.

The Battlefield series has visited the events of the World Wars on many occasions in the past, but after a string of successful titles depicting future warfare, Battlefield 1 did feel like a bit of a gamble at the time with its WW1 setting. However, it remains one of my favorite FPS games of all time and went over well with the vast majority of series fans. Despite taking things back to early 20th century firearms, sabers, and horses, it still managed to encapsulate everything great and defining about Battlefield. Intense and massive battles, huge map-altering events, and excellent vehicular combat.

The game’s lineup of maps takes you to pretty much every major World War 1 battleground. From the devastated French countryside, to the striking Sinai desert, to the rugged Italian alps, all of them feel distinct and can be approached with various strategies.

Switching from a world of holographic optics and suppressors to bolt-action rifles and shovels felt super fresh at the time, and despite there being less tech and weapon variety to play with in a WW1 setting, Battlefield 1 managed to create some satisfying and diverse gunplay. You can still snipe from massive distances, barrel into buildings with a shotgun or a flamethrower, pepper enemies with automatic submachine guns – it’s all there.

Battlefield 1 was, and still is, a masterpiece. As I write this, I’m itching to redownload it and give it a spin once more. Luckily, there’ll still be plenty of others to matchmake with – to this day, there is a huge active player base for the game, despite coming out over eight years ago in 2016.

On Steam, at least, the game still enjoys peak concurrent player counts upwards of 10,000 people each day. If you take a look at the numbers right now, you’ll notice they’re a little higher than usual, too. The main reason for this is that Battlefield 1 is unbelievably cheap right now.

From now until Monday, February 10, Battlefield 1 is 95% off on Steam, making this brilliant WW1 shooter just $1.99 / £1.74. That’s its lowest ever price on Valve’s platform. To grab it for yourself, head to its store page here.
