There seems to have been a massive flurry of new, Diablo-like ARPGs recently. Most notable among them, of course, is Path of Exile 2, but there are plenty of others that have arrived that steer clear of PoE and Diablo’s dark, hellish aesthetics. The latest newcomer to the genre is Coridden, a co-op action RPG set in an alien fantasy world that lets you shapeshift into the creatures you defeat in battle.

In Coridden, the citizens of the great city of Aasha have been forced to flee after it was overrun by dangerous beasts and completely locked down. People now live out in the wilds of Heera, a strange planet they barely know, but an extraordinary family is looking to fight back against the Aasha’s monsters thanks to their remarkable gift – using advanced technology to transform into the very creatures that threaten them. This squad of four siblings make up the four player classes in the RPG, but alongside upgrading and tinkering their own abilities, you’ll be able to do the same with all of the various monsters you learn to shapeshift into.

Coridden’s small development team at Aftnareld cites classic action RPGs like Diablo, Baldur’s Gate 2, and Champions of Norrath as its gameplay inspiration, and that’s immediately evident from the ability-heavy combat, isometric perspective, and sprawling world that’s stuffed with secrets and side quests. Thematically, though, the studio says the post-apocalyptic, nature versus technology vibe will feel familiar to those that love the Horizon games.

As you explore and engage in battles with beasts, you have the ability to freely shapeshift into the monsters you’ve faced at any time. That means you can swap between human and creature pretty much whenever you like, and that may be necessary for certain combat situations, traversal moments, or environmental puzzle solving. Each monster has a limited energy pool, though, so that does have to be taken into account.

The four siblings not only come with distinct abilities, but unique personalities too. Depending on which one you use, they may interact with NPCs differently or have access to unique side quests.

Because Coridden also supports co-op for up to (you guessed it) four players, you can also think strategically within your group about which characters and monsters to pick. While you can certainly play solo, there is a very cool bonus for playing with more than one person – you can actually ride around on each other if one of you is a monster and the other is human. Put your feet up, let your pal ferry you around Aasha instead.

Coridden is out right now on Steam, and if you pick it up before Wednesday, February 12, you’ll get 15% off, making it just $16.99 / £14.23. If you want to add it to your library or simply learn more about it, check out its Steam page here.

This looks like one of the most fun games like Diablo that’s come out in this recent flurry of new ARPGs, but there are loads of other amazing co-op games you can tackle with your friends too.
