Roguelike ARPG Ravenswatch proved one of my favorite surprises of 2024. I hadn’t followed it too closely during early access, but was immediately captivated when I jumped in ahead of the full launch in September. Structured like a more open-world spin on Hades and with nine Diablo-style classes inspired by all manner of classic fairy tales and legends, it’s great fun solo or in co-op. But if you’re someone who loves playing with a friend, Passtech Games has just revealed the perfect new DLC – and it’s coming to the game for free.

As it announces that 900,000 players have joined the Ravenswatch so far, developer Passtech lifts the lid on the next pair of characters coming to the roguelike. With a roster that includes a bitten Red Riding Hood who transforms into a wolf when night falls, the Pied Piper and his army of rats, an automaton-crafting version of Pinocchio’s Geppetto, and blood-sucking dhampir Carmilla, I’d been racking my brains to think what might inspire the next arrival. The answer, as it turns out, lies in the works of Shakespeare.

Star-crossed lovers Romeo and Juliet might not have met the perfect end we wished for in the famed bard’s original tale, but their Ravenswatch incarnations are bound to be inseparable for eternity by the antagonistic witch Baba Yaga herself. Indeed, that’s more than just simple flavor – this pair of adventurers must be played together in co-op.

Passtech’s take on the lovebirds casts Romeo as a noble master of fencing, and Juliet as an aristocrat with a secret penchant for sharpshooting. That makes them the perfect on-field complement to one another, allowing the former to dive into the fray headfirst while the latter unleashes devastation from a distance.

The pair are set to arrive in May and will be available to all players for free. A Steam sale lets you pick up the game at half price right now to celebrate the news if you’ve yet to do so, or if you want to encourage a friend (or lover) to join you in the lands of Reverie. You’ll need them by your side to hold off the Nightmares together when the update lands, after all.
