With its retro visuals and auto battler combat, you may perceive He is Coming to be a rather basic, simple experience that will fill your headphones with some nostalgic, old-timer sound effects as you idly watch encounters unfold. Well, you’d be wrong. The next exciting project from indie publisher Hooded Horse, He is Coming weaves in roguelite elements to create unpredictable playthroughs, 30 challenging bosses, and hundreds of items. Now, you can experience it yourself with a new demo for the imminent Steam Next Fest.

Hooded Horse seems to have a knack at scouting out truly remarkable indie games. Manor Lords is undoubtedly its most widely known success story, but there are so many other amazing games in its roster – both already out, and in the pipeline. He is Coming only recently got snapped up by the publisher, but already it’s being thrust into the Steam Next Fest spotlight.

Aiming to become one of the best auto battlers around, He is Coming runs on a day-night cycle whereby you explore the land for useful and powerful items while the sun’s up and fight corrupted minions after it sets. Every three days, you’ll also face off with one of the game’s 30 imposing bosses, but because He is Coming takes cues from roguelike games, you don’t know which one you’ll face, leading to randomized runs that can’t be pre-telegraphed. While portrayed in different styles and a bit more streamlined, there’s an essence of Darkest Dungeon about it.

As a result of this unpredictability, you need to hoard items, learn about each boss as you run into them, and make sure that you’re prepared for as many eventualities as possible. Of course, with this being an auto battler, you can’t outdo your opponents with well-timed attacks or cheesy combat strategies – you set your champion up for battle, and cross your fingers that you’ve done enough to come out victorious.

Once you’ve put the game’s 350 items to good use and have slain all the bosses in a perfect run, you’ll face off against the Demon King – the big bad that’s plunged this world into a corrupted darkness.

It looks like an intense experience, and you can get a feel for it right now. There is a new demo for He is Coming that runs from now until the end of Steam Next Fest on Monday, March 3.

As well as giving you a taste of its single-player mode, the new demo also features “the first version of the game’s asynchronous multiplayer mode, Kingmaker, where player builds are uploaded and sent out into the universe to fight other players in the ultimate test of strategic prowess.” Man, I love a good invasion mechanic.
