Steam is home to loads of brilliant WW2 games, ranging from immersive first-person shooters to strategy games that let you command a whole battlefield. But very, very few take things underwater and let you pilot a submarine. That’s what makes the brilliant Uboat so special. Now, this excellent mil sim has sunk back down to a criminally cheap price on Steam.

There aren’t too many great submarine games out there, and most focus on exploration. Uboat, though, is all about warfare. Taking command of a German sub, you need to silently glide through the water undetected to mount surprise attacks on unsuspecting ships and complete missions assigned to you from Kriegsmarine headquarters. However, at its heart, Uboat is an intense and realistic management game.

Plotting courses and accurately firing torpedoes is all well and good, but on each voyage you’ll have to be spinning several plates to make sure your sub (and her crew) are looked after. You give the orders to your submariners, and that includes telling them to stay in their bunks to conserve oxygen supplies, feeding them when hungry, and playing them music to lift their spirits when morale is low.

You also have to ensure you’re not overexerting your sub by disabling unnecessary devices and only reenabling them when needed. Everything is hyper-realistic and intricate – that might be why we waited several years for Uboat to finally emerge from early access last year.

While it’s not the first time that Uboat has been on sale and dropped to this price, we feel duty-bound to always alert you when it’s cheap – it’s great, and it’s something any fan of WW2 games will love.

Right now, Uboat is 70% off on Steam, which takes it back down to its joint-lowest price of $8.99 / £7.49. This offer ends on Saturday, February 1. To learn more about Uboat, or take advantage of that discount, check out its store page here.
