Disappointed that The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim didn’t actually let you become a Jarl? Viking Dynasty, the latest entry in Toplitz Productions’ Dynasty series, is your chance to prove yourself as the leader and founder of a Viking settlement. The very survival of your village will depend on your ability to hunt, roam and rule.

Viking Dynasty, coming next year, looks set to dial back on the bloodier aspects of Viking society, but that doesn’t mean this Viking game will be any less challenging. The latest in a series that includes Sengoku Dynasty, Medieval Dynasty and Wild West Dynasty, it tasks you with establishing a Viking settlement, ruling it as the Jarl and even raising your own family.

Sure, Vikings have a reputation for being hardy, but they still need food and shelter; neglect your duties, or fail to assign tasks correctly, and they’ll let you know about it. A freezing, empty-bellied settler is unlikely to stick around, so, no pressure.

Your Viking settler has washed up on the shore of a rocky archipelago, so you’re starting from scratch. But while your ship may be a wreck, Viking Dynasty will let let you craft a new one. You’ll be able to take to the seas once more in search of treasure, to find others to join your village or just for the hell of it.

It appears combat is limited to hunting animals, so don’t count on Viking Dynasty going full Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla. But Toplitz promises the vast world you explore will be genuinely immersive and authentically Norse, not just some generic sandbox. Certainly, going by the teaser trailer, Viking Dynasty’s world looks pretty eye-catching.

However, as appealing as all this sounds, you’ll have to wait a little while to earn your Norse credentials. Viking Dynasty is pencilled in for a late 2025 Steam Early Access release, but it’s possible, as was the case with Vampire Dynasty, we’ll get a demo before then.

In the meantime, why not explore some of the best city building games and best survival games?
