Frostpunk 2, sequel to the original post-apocalyptic city-builder, pitches you into a frozen world where your decisions can mean life or death for hundreds if not thousands of people. However, this follow-up hasn’t been as well received as its predecessor, and developer 11 bit studios has revealed how it plans to build on this icy foundation.

Putting you in charge of a dwindling, freezing populace, Frostpunk 2 isn’t short on tough decisions. But developer 11 bit studios is facing its own challenges, acknowledging, albeit in a slightly cryptic way, that this survival strategy game sequel could benefit from a little work.

Right now, the original Frostpunk has four times the number of players as Frostpunk 2 and its reviews are sitting at mixed on Steam. Complaints include that the sequel is very different from the original and that the presence of scripted events detracts from the game.

Now, the developer has shared a new roadmap, revealing just what’s in store for Frostpunk 2 players. Previously undated, 11 bit has confirmed there’ll be a major content update this May 8 which, amongst other things, will “Adjust the City’s management, paying homage to the order established by the first New Londoners.”

Again, that’s a teensy bit cryptic, but it implies that Frostpunk 2 will be getting features that bring it more into line with the original game, possibly letting you exclude the city council altogether. Right now, if you want to make some serious changes in Frostpunk 2’s world you need enough support and not all players are keen on that concession to democracy. Adding the option to eliminate, while ethically suspect, could help streamline the Frostpunk 2 experience.

The roadmap also confirms that the first piece of paid DLC, Spectrum, will drop in autumn, followed by the Aurora DLC later in the year and the as-yet-unnamed third DLC in 2026. We hope that the improvements 11 bit has planned are enough to thaw Frostpunk 2’s slightly chilly reception.

In the meantime, the game is still worth playing, especially with the best Frostpunk 2 mods. But if you’re after a different kind of survival experience, we’ve picked out the best survival games and the best apocalypse games.
