Ah, Ghost Recon. What a series. If only we knew how good we had it back in the day where new games, spinoffs, and expansions would drop frequently. These days, the well is pretty much dry, save for revisiting Ghost Recon Breakpoint, the most recent game in the series. That’s exactly what swathes of players are doing right now, because Breakpoint is currently blessed with an almighty discount on Steam.

If you owned a PC in the 2000s and you loved military shooters, the chances are you indulged in at least one Ghost Recon game. They’re brilliantly strategic and immersive games that give you the feeling of playing with a squad even if you’re riding solo. However, as has become the way with almost all things Ubisoft, Ghost Recon’s return in 2017 with Wildlands and its 2019 follow-up Breakpoint turned things into a more formulaic open-world game. Like most Ubi games these days, it had a visually impressive world and interesting setting, but the open-world shift was a move that fans of the early Ghost Recon games found to be pretty controversial.

However, there is still enjoyment to be had in Wildlands and Breakpoint as they don’t totally shy away from the tactical, commander-style experience that you got with old games. Both also come with the sync shot system that lets you simultaneously take down enemies with coordinated shots from either your AI teammates or drones. It’s a fun and satisfying feature that does at least mean Ghost Recon can still stand out from other open-world shooters.

That enjoyment is evidenced in the fact that Breakpoint is seeing a rather big resurgence on Steam right now – well, it’s partly to do with enjoyment, and largely to do with the fact it costs just a few bucks at the moment thanks to a generous discount. Typically hitting concurrent peaks of around 1,000-2,000 players, Breakpoint has over the last couple of days clocked peaks that are roughly five times that amount. On Sunday, March 2, it topped out at over 10,000 players, and today, March 3, it hit around 9,300. Not bad for a controversial, five-year-old Ubisoft open-world game, eh?

As mentioned though, that’s mostly down to Breakpoint’s very low price right now. Until Thursday, March 13, Ghost Recon Breakpoint is 90% off on Steam, meaning it costs just $5.99 / £4.99. Similar discounts can also be found on its more expensive additions too if you want to get yourself a bit more extra content to play through.

While I’d love to see a return to the Ghost Recon series and its traditional roots, I’m not exactly hopeful. Maybe that’s a third reason why Breakpoint is attracting so many players – people know that it’ll likely be a long old wait for another entry, unless Ubisoft really surprises us in the near future. If Breakpoint is your kind of thing, why not check out some of the best FPS games or best war games for some similar thrills.
