There are a lot of mysteries in Project Zomboid. What exactly is Spiffo’s up to, and what’s its role in the Knox Event? Is the town in the center of the map called Ekron, Fallas Lake, or something else? And why do I have to drive all the way to Muldraugh if I want a sledgehammer? But as unstable build 42 rolls out and The Indie Stone’s superlative zombie survival game continues to get better, a groundbreaking new Project Zomboid mod answers the biggest question of all: what was Knox Country like before the outbreak? Transforming the Zomboid experience from top to bottom, this is an absolute must-play.

Unstable build 42 introduces basements, a new lighting system, animal husbandry, and several new floors to the highly mysterious military research base. The key question of how the Knox outbreak began, however, still remains. There are conflicting reports. For some Project Zomboid devotees, the virus is airborne, and was probably created by the government itself. The wilder theories suggest it comes from a tainted shipment of Spiffo’s special sauce. Either way, we finally have a glimpse (albeit an unofficial one) of life in the survival game before everyone died and got hungry.

‘Week One’ by Project Zomboid mod-making icon ‘Slayer’ is out now. Rather than mid July, after the outbreak has already obliterated Knox Country, your game now begins a week before everything goes to hell. There are no zombies. Human NPCs go to work, walk the streets, and relax in their homes. You’re free to enjoy life in Knox without any risk of the undead – but slowly, the infection starts to spread, and the world unravels. You can get a good look at the mod in action courtesy of ‘Thanetian Gaming.’

A few disclaimers. Week One only works for Project Zomboid’s single player, and since it makes such drastic changes to the entire game world it can have some pretty significant effects on performance – Slayer’s advice is to use the sandbox settings to lower the zombie and NPC counts.

Also, you can’t use the mod during an in-progress game; you need to start afresh. Similarly, Week One is made exclusively for build 42, so if you’re still running a legacy version, make sure you change that in your launch options. You can get the mod right now, right here.

Otherwise, you might want to try some of the other best zombie games, or maybe the best open-world games available on PC today.
