Things aren’t altogether great on Earth at the minute, and although consumer space travel seems a long way away still, Stellaris provides a mechanically-rich portal to the stars above. Right now, you can enjoy the spacefaring escapism for its lowest price ever at Steam.

Released back in 2016, Stellaris has become a pillar of the grand strategy game scene. Developed by Paradox Studios, the outfit behind Hearts of Iron, Crusader Kings, and many other 4X games of note, Stellaris places you in charge of creating a futuristic planetary kingdom, with all the conflict and decision-making that requires.

What starts as reconnaissance and base-building and scoping out different areas becomes an incredible tapestry of emergent storytelling. Should you barter with this race? What’s going on in this region? Should we go to war?

Questions like this arrive in droves, and before you know it, it’s all you can think about. Paradox has become extremely adept at the kind of RTS games you play over the span of years, enjoying the updates and letting what happens, happens. Stellaris is a commitment, but a rewarding one, and the current discount on Steam is perfect if you’re at all curios.

It’s a reliable space game that scratches some particular itches, including, “Could I construct Star Trek’s utopian future?”. In my case, the answer was no, but you might have better luck! Nonetheless, it’s a steal at this price point.

Stellaris is on sale for 90% off on Steam right now, costing £3.49/€4.19/$4.29. Have a look at our guides to the Stellaris console commands and the Stellaris DLC to make your journey to the cosmos that much smoother.
