The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom somewhat revamps the entire Rune system from Breath of the Wild. This time you get a completely different set of extra abilities that are channeled directly through your hand. The first of these is Ultrahand, and its unlocked within the first thirty minutes of the game. Here’s how to get and use the Ultrahand ability in Tears of the Kingdom.

Unlocking the Ultrahand ability and moving things around

Ultrahand is given to you automatically upon entering the first shrine of the game, Ukouh. More on how to solve that shrine here. This is an ability that allows you to grab certain objects, move them around and rotate, and even attach them to other objects.

Selecting Ultrahand

To start using it, press the left bumper and select it from the ability menu that pops up. Any object that can be moved will light up in green. Make sure you’re in range to grab it as you move the crosshair over it, then Press A.

You’ve now got an object in your grasp you can move around. Physically tilting the switch or using the right joystick will move the object around. The left joystick moves Link. And the left joycon’s up and down arrows will move the object further or closer to Link.

Rotating the object is a whole second set of controls, though. First you have to hold down the right bumper to enter rotate mode. Up and down on the left joycon rotate the object vertically, while left and right do the same horizontally. It’s not an exact movement process like with the joysticks, instead rotating in specific intervals. This can make trying to get the exact angle you need something of a trial and error process.

Green Shadow

When moving an object, pay close attention to the green shadow it casts. This shows you where it’s going to land when you drop it. And to drop it, you simply press B and let it drop.

Lastly, you can also attach objects together. To do this, pick up an object and move it next to the other and press A. Be careful and specific about placement, though. It’s particular and likely going to attach it exactly where you placed it.

You can unstick objects any time, but the process is a bit finicky. You have to press down on the right joystick and wiggle it back and forth until it detaches, but it will detach.

And now that you know how to get and use the Ultrahand ability in Tears of the Kingdom, the world is your oyster. Go forth and build as many weird little stuck together creations as your heart contends.
