With so many survival games around these days, new releases have got to do whatever they can to set themselves apart. RailGods of Hysterra understands this, and so is bringing a Lovecraftian demon train to the party in the hopes of waltzing through the front door. It’s such a bizarre idea that it just might work, and you can test that for yourself right now. The game has a new Steam demo you can try, if you fancy your chances in a place overrun with Eldritch horrors.
The world of RailGods of Hysterra has been absolutely decimated by the Great Old Ones – cosmic beings that feel straight out of a Lovecraftian novel. Darkness has engulfed the land, gross monsters attach themselves to everything in sight, and the chances of outlasting the dangers are pretty slim. Not for you though, because you’re a Dreamer with a RailGod. These sentient locomotives are like a fortress on wheels, and require sacrifices if they are to remain a steadfast stronghold.
As with many survival games, you need to explore the world, find resources, craft tools, and maintain weapons. Unlike the competition, however, having your own RailGod means your base can move around the deadly landscape. You can upgrade the hellish train’s carriages, and deepen your bond with the beast inside. To do this you need to stop your travels, take a trip into the murky depths, and reemerge with trapped enemies to feed to the RailGod.
My colleague Lauren played RailGods of Hysterra for herself last year and loved it, if you want to learn more about what to expect from this new demo. You won’t have to fight off the horrors alone, however, as the game is set to feature up to five-player co-op. You’ll have to watch out for each other’s health, hunger, and sanity, however, because losing just one could spell disaster for your chances of living through the endless night.
Troglobytes Games has released the RailGods of Hysterra demo on Steam, with the full game scheduled for 2025. You can get involved right here.
We’ve also brought together all the best horror games and co-op games you can play on PC today, if RailGods of Hysterra isn’t enough for you.
