There are lots of brilliant single-player, third-person shooters out there. Dead Space. Returnal. Metal Gear Solid. There’s a super broad range of critically-acclaimed and unique-feeling experiences out there. But how many of them let you transform into an alien in the middle of a battle? If there is one, I can’t remember it. Luckily, Project Tower has now arrived on Steam to fill this extraterrestrial niche.

Created by just four developers over at Yummy Games, Project Tower puts you in the shoes of a lone captive fighting back against the Hiks. The Hiks are an alien race that have invaded Earth so that they can round up humans and essentially put them through a really messed up alien gameshow. Their prisoners are tasked with fighting their way up various alien-filled towers as a test of strength, and you are one such inmate that’s trying to reach the summit. As you progress through the various floors of this single-player game, you’ll obtain increasingly-powerful weapons to take on the increasingly-powerful creatures living within the tower. There are even some big red-bar boss fights to tackle in between the general hordes of aliens.

However, you’ve got more than just some poxy old guns at your disposal. During your ordeal, you learn the art of Metamorphing, which lets you transform into the various types of alien that you slay. From space maggots to huge creatures that kinda remind me of Deathclaws from Fallout, you can shapeshift into them to not only get an upper hand in combat, but to also complete Project Towers environmental puzzles.

You can also turn yourself into different machines and devices that will let you crack these puzzles and carry on progressing up the tower.

I’ve got to admit that some of the environments I’ve seen thus far in early gameplay footage do look a bit barren and basic, but Project Tower’s concept alone has got a little hook in me. Plus, it’s modestly priced and there’s an introductory discount too.

Project Tower is out now on Steam with 20% off, making it just $19.99 / £16.79. It’s also got a demo if you want to try before you buy. You can learn more about it, pick it up, or download that demo right here.

If this isn’t quite what you’re looking for right now, here are some other excellent space games that’ll let you explore alien worlds. Alternatively, if you just want to slay some beasties, there’ll be plenty of games for you in our list of the best FPS games.
