He said he’d be back, and he is. 34 years after Terminator 2 hit movie screens, one indie developer has traveled back in time to give us Terminator 2D: No Fate, an action side-scroller based on James Cameron’s blockbuster sequel.

Games based on movies have always been a mixed bag, and they’re a relative rarity these days. But one developer thinks they’ve got the formula right with Terminator 2D: No Fate, a side-scrolling retro game that aims to do justice to the 1991 Arnold Schwarzenegger action movie.

Developer Bitmap Bureau describes it as “A love letter to 80s/90s arcade games and we feel like it’s the T2 game we should have had back in our youth.” Based on the trailer, they’re not wrong.

That’s not to say we didn’t appreciate all those other Terminator 2 games, and Bethesda’s original The Terminator occupied way too much of our time. But the official T2 games felt like fast forwarding through the movie.

Bitmap Bureau, on the other hand, has set out to recreate the film in its entirety. It boasts the aesthetics of a 90s arcade game, with all the power of a PC behind it; that truck chase, in particular, is to die for.

What’s particularly intriguing is that the game promises multiple endings. James Cameron’s original blockbuster had two endings, depending on which cut you watch. We’re hoping for one where John Connor ‘falls’ into the vat of molten iron and creates a universe-ending paradox.

We’ll have to wait a while to wait to find out, however, because Terminator 2D: No Fate is set for a September 5th release date. If you feel like clunking around in the meantime, we’ve got the best robot games and, for more gems from small developers, the best indie games.
