Sniper Elite: Resistance takes Rebellion’s storied series to France for some good ol’ fashioned Nazi huntin’.
Should players enlist in this hidden war and plan their perfect shot? Check out our review and find out.
Sniper Elite: Resistance puts players in the shoes of British sniper Harry Hawker. Behind enemy lines in Nazi-occupied France, Harry is there to find out what the Germans are building – and determine if it needs to be stopped.
It doesn’t take long to find out these opposing forces are building a super weapon; one that can stop the allied invasion dead in its tracks. With a few resistance fighters, you set out to travel across France and put a stop to Hitler’s plans.
Fans of the Sniper Elite series will know that each level is pretty meaty, and Sniper Elite: Resistance’s campaign is no exception, taking a good 16 hours in all.
That being said, Sniper Elite: Resistance’s France setting quite literally changes the game.
Players will still come across Nazi castles, farms, and wooded areas, but more city missions will make their appearance.
The thought of so many buildings made us think sniping would be more difficult and annoying, but that didn’t prove to be the case. Rather, it provided more places to snipe from!
Once we started playing Sniper Elite: Resistance more like an Assassin’s Creed title and pulled off stealth takedowns, everything started to click. Using this extra cover – along with windows, bottles, and generators – clearing out whole buildings was a breeze.
The cleaner one pulls off a mission in Sniper Elite: Resistance, the more EXP players will net in the end. That being said, you can kill everyone and still earn a ton of experience. One of the main reasons to keep quiet is to do the optional objectives without having to deal with reinforcements. These typically include getting files, destroying vehicles, or cracking safes.
The other optional objective in Sniper Elite: Resistance is to kill a target These guys are (usually) more protected, but they patrol around – giving one more sniper opportunities.
On that note, Rebellion once again nailed the gunplay in Sniper Elite: Resistance.
The sniping in Sniper Elite: Resistance is on point, and the X-ray kills feel satisfying and visceral. There is nothing like a double headshot or a double nut shot – except maybe the elusive triple-kill.
Near the end of my campaign, we were pulling off explosive kills as well. If you get the chance, drop a mine near a troop truck and let the bodies fly.
On top of your sniper rifle, you can bring a side arm and an SMG or the unlockable Trench Gun. Most unlocks in Sniper Elite: Resistance come from beating levels or finding the workbenches in levels. There are also a couple that come from challenges that you earn by finding propaganda posters in the campaign missions.
While your sidearm can come with a silencer, it doesn’t silence your shot completely. Put simply, players will need to be smart, or they’ll quickly be alerted to other enemies nearby.
Outside of the campaign, Sniper Elite: Resistance also features multiplayer and survival modes.
Survival is just like it sounds; players will join with a crew and defend points from the enemies. The longer one defends, the better one’s reward – and the more difficult enemies become. All campaign weapons and skills transfer over, making it worth grinding out the campaign first. There are only a few levels as of this writing, but they are worth going through at least one.
Meanwhile, Sniper Elite: Resistance’s multiplayer pits players against others – albeit with the return of the the Axis Invasion.
This means one can have different players invade a campaign for extra challenge. Sniping in multiplayer games never appealed to us, but when everyone is using one, it at least feels fair.
There is one mode in Sniper Elite: Resistance that stood out called No Cross, which is perfect for sniping battles. The center of the map is off-limits, so one needs to fight at range. This, in turn, means no one can sneak up when sniping. If that isn’t for you, typical team deathmatch, free-for-all, and squad matches are also available in Sniper Elite: Resistance.
Sniper Elite: Resistance also features Propaganda Poster challenges.
When one finds the posters in the campaign missions, players will then be able to unlock challenge missions. There are three types: stealth, sniping, and combat. While the sniping challenge especially stands out, all help train obe to become a better soldier. If you unlock one, it’s best to do it after one’s mission.
Sniper Elite: Resistance featured a handful of bugs. One popped up when looking through a window, causing the textures outside to not load. The area outside of the window was fine; it just didn’t load through the windows. The AI also occasionally got stuck walking in place while going up the stairs. Despite that, there were no crashes or major bugs during our playthrough.
Sniper Elite: Resistance’s switch of scenery to France proves to be the correct move for the series. Fans of the Sniper Elite series will find plenty to enjoy with this Resistance.
