Say what you will about Star Citizen, but the people who enjoy it, really enjoy it. The gigantic space MMO, now 13 years into early access, has accrued massive, devoted player-base and an increasingly large amount of funding. 2024 was a hallmark year in that vain, with Cloud Imperium Games taking in $114 million worth of pledges from fans.

That makes last year the second-best on record for Star Citizen in terms of crowdfunding. The ever-expanding space game managed to bring in $116 million in 2023, just ahead of 2024’s amount and maintaining a high bar for the MMORPG‘s community.

For context, that’s nearly three times Black Myth: Wukong’s purported $43 million development budget. Even more impressively, Star Citizen took in more money in 2024 than The Witcher 3’s entire production, a cycle that reportedly cost CD Projekt Red $81 million. Two of the biggest and best RPGs of the last decade, and they’re but a drop in the ocean of Cloud Imperium’s gigantic spaceship sim.

If this has you wondering how much Star Citizen has made overall, the number is now just over $774 million, with a total number of players that’s verging on 5,500,000. That’s a lot of people, and a lot of money, and you can see why.

Even though it’s still unfinished, Star Citizen offers a deep universe that you can explore and interact with in all manner of ways. Likewise there’s now a vibrant community to get stuck into, and it’s been running so long, it’ll be part of the furniture in people’s lives.

Most players are in for the long haul and find it rewarding in their own way. Criticism is often lobbied at Cloud Imperium for the delivery rate of updates and promises, but it ultimately doesn’t seem to matter a lot of the community.
