Starfield isn’t dead as Bethesda promises “a lot of exciting things” in 2025

It feels like a very, very long time since we had something to shout about in regards to Starfield. While there’s been a steady trickle of Bethesda-approved and supported Creations mods, we haven’t had a game update of any magnitude since November last year – that’s over three and a half months ago. There have also been no teasers or comments on the RPG’s next DLC, which will hopefully deliver a more memorable experience than the mediocre Shattered Space. Acknowledging that things have been a little quiet lately, Bethesda has now come out to say that it has “a lot of exciting things” planned for Starfield in 2025.

Given Bethesda’s track record of making some of the best RPGs ever and my love of all things interstellar, I was more than optimistic that Starfield would be one of my all-time favorite games. While it ultimately fell short of the lofty expectations I’d set for it pre-launch, I still had a decent time with it. When the time came for Shattered Space, its first DLC expansion, I adjusted my expectations accordingly, but even then, it underwhelmed. While the subject matter (the dark and mysterious home world of House Va’ruun) was the right thing to pursue and the promise of more hand-crafted content was exactly what the doctor ordered, it just felt… flat. I didn’t have an awful time playing through it, but it wasn’t the punchy, memorable expansion I’d hoped it would be.

Bethesda has already confirmed that a second expansion is coming for Starfield, so it’s got another shot at creating a much more engaging and grand DLC. It may even be the last one for the game, given that the studio will want to be arriving at The Elder Scrolls 6 release date sooner rather than later. DLC 2 could be a big deal for Starfield’s legacy, but we’ve heard absolutely nothing about it, and there haven’t even been any updates or improvements to the base game for a while either.

“We know you’re eager for an update, and we truly appreciate your passion for Starfield,” Bethesda says in response to a fan on X calling out its lack of communication around the future of the game. “The team has been hard at work, and while we’re not ready to share specific details just yet, we have a lot of exciting things planned for the game this year that we can’t wait to talk about when the time is right.

“We’re always listening and taking your feedback to heart. Thanks for being part of this journey with us.”

Well, that’s something at least. “A lot of exciting things” fills me with a bit of optimism that more than just the new expansion will be coming. However, one of those ‘things’ is almost certainly going to be a PS5 version of the game given Microsoft’s new multi-platform console strategy. Perhaps the new expansion will even launch alongside a PS5 port? As for when the “right” time is, I’d hazard a guess that the annual Xbox summer showcase would be the perfect time and place for a full reveal of the next Starfield DLC. That’s still a few months away though, should it return in June like it has in previous years, so the drought of Starfield news may continue for a while yet.
