Every once in a while, a videogame’s visual style completely knocks me off my feet. Since I first saw it, 4X strategy adventure Songs of Silence has done just that. It’s got a truly colourful aesthetic and a bountiful mix of genres, making it unlike anything I’ve ever played. You’ve been able to play it in full for some time now, but another update is right around the corner, alongside a big new DLC to get excited about.

Songs of Silence is a handful of strategy genres rolled into one. It’s part 4X game, RTS, and even autobattler, and this blend creates an experience unlike any other. You choose a faction, build up your army and resources, and set out to clear the fog of war. All the battles take place in real time, with positioning and quick decision-making needed for victory. But you also have ability cards, which you can use to summon creatures, special attacks, and more. There are no decks to build either, so you can just hold onto these cards and use them when they’re needed most.

With visuals inspired by the long, organic lines of Art Nouveau and a soundtrack composed by Final Fantasy legend Hitoshi Sakimoto, Songs of Silence has a sense of style unlike anything else in the strategy game genre. Soon, the game’s going to get even better. Songs of Silence is expanding with both a free patch and DLC.

Update 1.2 is set to bring in a scenario where you fend off the new Lighteaters faction, which will also come with a handful of challenges for you to complete. You can also finally choose your faction color in the Skirmish mode, and expect a handful of economy changes and bug fixes.

At the same time, developer Chimera Entertainment is also releasing the brand new Lighteaters DLC. The titular faction comes with two new hero archetypes, six hero vocations, eight units, five strategy cards and eight battle cards, a unit perk, and another capital. Basically, it’s packed with entirely new ways to play, and you can still fight anyone online who doesn’t own the expansion.

If you’re yet to try Songs of Silence, Chimera Entertainment actually did something completely unheard of, and reduced the game’s price when it launched in 1.0. If you buy it now, you’ll be paying $10 less than you would have during Steam Early Access.

Both the Songs of Silence Lighteaters DLC and 1.2 update drop on Thursday February 20. You’ll find the game here.
