The writing is reportedly on the wall for the finest GPU of AMD’s last three generations, as our favorite current Radeon GPU has apparently reached the end of its life. Originally a China exclusive, but later released to the rest of the world, the AMD Radeon RX 7900 GRE brought a cutdown version of the company’s flagship Navi 31 GPU to the mid-range GPU market, with a surprisingly low price for the power on offer.
Indeed, we gave this card a score of 9/10 in our Radeon RX 7900 GRE review, with AMD seemingly giving away some of its best tech for the same price as an Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070. It might not have had the benefits of the Nvidia DLSS ecosystem backing it up, but you couldn’t beat this AMD GPU’s brute force power at its $550 price.
Now, however, it looks as though this mid-range GPU king is being phased out, according to this report by Dutch tech site Tweakers.net. The site claims to have spoken to AMD graphics card partners, who say that the GPU had been “declared end-of-life.”
We had wondered what had happened to the 7900 GRE, as stock of this graphics card is very difficult to find at this time, and when you can find it, this GPU is overly expensive. However, it now looks as though this stock isn’t ever going to be replenished, if AMD has indeed called time on the 7900 GRE.
Although it wasn’t as fast as the Radeon RX 7900 XT, the 7900 GRE was significantly cheaper, and still offered 5,120 stream processors, compared to just 3,840 on the only slightly cheaper RX 7800 XT. In fact, if you didn’t enable ray tracing, we found the 7900 GRE was even quicker than the much more expensive Nvidia GeForce RTX 4070 Ti Super in Cyberpunk 2077 at 1440p, with a similar result in F1 23.
It’s not a great surprise to see this GPU on its way out, though, given that AMD is rumored to be announcing the new Radeon RX 8800 XT at the CES 2025 tradeshow in January, although AMD’s Radeon RX 7800 XT appears to still be in plentiful supply right now at its normal sub-$500 price. The new RX 8800 XT is rumored to massively improve ray tracing performance compared to its predecessor, which would help AMD better compete against Nvidia.
