We’ve seen a lot of realistic mil sim shooters crop up in recent months. There’s the breakout hit Delta Force, there’s the intense Gray Zone Warfare, and then there’s Exfil, an Escape From Tarkov-style FPS which has all the core ingredients you need to be a gripping extraction experience. It’s been flying pretty low under the radar since it launched in early access, but with a big new update and a free-to-play weekend, it may soon see a change in fortunes.

For those that love the precise, unforgiving, tactical gameplay that a hardcore FPS game demands, Exfil ticks a lot of the boxes. Realistic weapon handling and bullet physics, high-stakes objectives, and unforgiving environments are all here and present. As mentioned, it’s targeting the hard-to-crack subgenre of extraction shooters right out the gate, with both a classic and asymmetrical extraction mode on offer. However, it’s been missing some key features since its early access launch in December last year, but today’s update goes a long way towards changing that.

For starters, you can now decide to play solo or co-op, and AI enemies have been added to make maps less sparse and more challenging. So, the PvPvE experience you find in most other extraction titles is now supported. The number of game modes has also expanded to three with the addition of Seek and Destroy, and there’s a brand new LMG class for all you heavy gunners out there.

Elsewhere, an interactive tac map has been added, which will make navigating levels and coordinating strikes on objectives easier. Tweaks have been made to weapon sway and recoil across several weapons too as Exfil continues to find the perfect sweet spot between balance and hyperrealism. Finally, there’s been an overall engine upgrade to Unreal Engine 5.3 as well as upgrades to DLSS and FSR.

To get the new and improved Exfil in the hands of more players, a free weekend is now underway. Currently, there’s a demo available to download on its Steam page, but don’t be fooled – this ‘demo’ is actually the entire game as it stands right now, it’s just being opened up for free for a short period.

Exfil’s free weekend is live right now and concludes on Monday, March 24. Should you emerge the other side liking what you played, the game will also be purchasable with 25% off until Wednesday, March 26.
