Death Stranding 2 release date estimate, cast, trailer, and story

When is the Death Stranding 2 release date? Hideo Kojima himself confirmed that it is on the way, after all. Not a whole lot of official information has been revealed at all about Death Stranding 2, but there are some things we know about the next Kojima Productions release, including speculation on the release date, cast details, and more.

So, what’s next for Sam, Fragile, and Lou, the stars of one of the best PC games in recent years? Here’s everything we know about the Death Stranding 2 release date so far, including where we might expect the story to take us in the open-world game. If you haven’t played the first Death Stranding, beware that there are some minor spoilers ahead.

Death Stranding 2 release date estimate

The Death Stranding 2 release date is set to arrive sometime in 2025, as per January 2024’s PlayStation State of Play trailer. However, we don’t expect it to launch until towards the end of next year as the game has been in its roughly year-long ‘adjustment phase’ since sometime around May – an update given by Kojima himself on his NHK radio show, Hideraji Infinity.

While Death Stranding 2 was initially announced as a PlayStation 5 title, we expect the game to eventually come out on PC, just like its predecessor. The original Death Stranding took eight months to make the jump to the PC, so fans of the action-adventure game could be in for a bit of a wait.

Once it arrives on PC, Death Stranding 2 is unlikely to be available on Game Pass. However, we can expect it to arrive on Steam, though whether this will be a Director’s Cut special edition like its predecessor is unknown.

Death Stranding 2 trailers

Let’s have a look at that Death Stranding 2 reveal trailer, shall we? The first few shots show Fragile and baby Lou in what later turns out to be an underground bunker. Yes, that’s the same baby Sam carried in his tank in the first Death Stranding. Lou seems to be about two years old now, looking happy and healthy.

We then see a figurine that resembles Amelie, the Extinction Entity from the first game (a being that causes mass extinction). The figurine can also be spotted on top of a coffin in what appears to be a religious procession.

The Death Stranding 2 trailer then cuts back to Fragile and the baby as their home is attacked. Fragile grabs Louise, escapes the bunker, and flees on a motor-driven unicycle before getting shot in her arm and falling to the ground. Someone draws a gun, there’s a glimpse of a BB entity inside a human body, and then we see Fragile crawling towards Louise, who lies completely still. The sequence ends with a shot of a BB tank surrounded by cryptobiotes.

A few moments later, Sam Porter Bridges finally makes an appearance as he and Fragile watch the reveal of her new mech-ship. She asks him to join her crew, signaling that this scene may appear at the start of Death Stranding 2.

Nope, that’s still not the end of the trailer. After the credits, we see a shot of a mysterious masked person holding a guitar, the phrase “should we have connected?” and a BB tank that, instead of a BB, is housing an octopus. Enough food for thought, right?

Death Stranding 2 ‘On the Beach’ trailer explained

On January 31, Kojima Productions dropped a nearly ten-minute-long Death Stranding 2 trailer. The trailer, which discloses the sequel’s title ‘On the Beach’, opens with Fragile and an unknown man, played by former Mad Max director George Miller, operating on a body that appears to be heavily affected by tar. By the looks of it, the tar body could be Elle Fanning’s character or the one played by Shioli Kutsuna.

As Fragile and the man are working, we see a BT-cat with an octopus tongue licking up some of the tar. Oddly, the body has octopus marks on its arm – probably not from the cat though. As a bit of tar inadvertently lands on Fragile’s skin, she seems to suffer from minor timefall effects. Although she looks slightly shocked, another event diverts her attention: the body has come alive.

The next scenes bring us aboard the DHV Magellan, Fragile’s mech-ship. As she shows us around, Fragile explains that she founded an organization called Drawbridge, which a generous but anonymous patron funds. As Sam leaves to explore the rocky hills, sandy deserts, and large cities that make up the scenery in Death Stranding 2 (and not just on foot – look at that epic motorcycle and quad bike!), he’s joined by a tiny talking puppet who’ll likely become our new companion throughout the game. On a side note, notice that Sam’s hair is brown again. In earlier trailers, it was white when he first saw the ship, so this could be a case of time reversal. Or hair dye – who knows?

The trailer then reveals the identity of the masked villain teased in the Death Stranding 2 reveal trailer: yes, it’s Higgs, the bad guy, and he’s brought his guitar/laser weapon as well as a robot army. Sam asks if Higgs killed Lou (confirming that Lou might indeed be dead) to which Higgs replies that Sam “still doesn’t know” – implying that he didn’t kill Lou, or that there are things about Lou that Sam doesn’t understand. They don’t have time to talk about it any further, though, as one of the robots goes rogue.

Finally, we hear Sam and Fragile agreeing to investigate the Lou mystery further before the camera moves to Elle Fanning’s character, who’s spying on Sam, George Miller’s character, and the tar-affected body. Strangely enough, this scene heavily suggests that the body is the same person as Elle Fanning – who, in turn, may or may not be Lou. They both wear the same arm wrap, and the white puppet strings above Elle Fanning imply that she might be on the beach, somehow still tied to her body on the operating table.

Death Stranding 2 cast

One of the things that stood out about the first Death Stranding was its cast of famous actors. It looks like the sequel will be no different. The Kojima Productions website confirms the following Death Stranding 2 cast members:

  • Norman Reedus – Sam
  • Léa Seydoux – Fragile
  • Troy Baker – Higgs Monaghan
  • Elle Fanning
  • Shioli Kutsuna

You may wonder if there’s a chance to see Mads Mikkelsen again in Death Stranding 2. However, as his character’s storyline in the first game seems to have ended, and there’s no mention of him on the Kojima Productions website, we probably shouldn’t count on it.

Death Stranding 2 story speculation

Fragile’s new mech, along with her invitation to Sam, suggests that there’ll be traveling aplenty in Death Stranding 2. Whether or not baby Lou will be there with us remains to be seen, as the baby’s motionless body at the end of the bunker-fleeing scene suggests the worst…

But don’t despair, as the Death Stranding 2 trailer strongly hints at alternate timelines, perhaps even fake realities. Most notably, we can see Fragile’s body looking young and healthy at the start of the trailer, even though her body in the original game has aged due to timefall exposure. In a later scene, Fragile is covered up again. Did Fragile find a way to heal her body? Or did the scene with the dying Lou not really happen? To make things even weirder, Fragile’s eyes seem to be leaking a tar-like substance, suggesting that she may have died and come back to life as a repatriate.

Another interesting detail is Sam’s hair, which has somehow turned grey. Perhaps it’s simply the passing of time, or perhaps he suffered timefall effects as well. However, as his face and body appear the exact same, it’s much more likely that something else has changed his hair color.

It seems that the robed figures, including the person seemingly shooting Fragile, may become our main enemies in Death Stranding 2, possibly with the guitar-playing masked guy as their leader. Based on their looks, the guitar player could be Higgs, Amelie, or at least someone with a strong link to the latter. After all, the mystery person is wearing a mask, and Troy Baker has already been confirmed as a Death Stranding 2 cast member. At the same time, the mystery person rocked the same hairstyle as Amelie while wearing her necklace.

Death Stranding 2 latest news

According to Kojima (spotted by Famitsu), the filming and recording stage of production wrapped sometime around May 2024, and the game has now entered its ‘adjustment phase.’ During this phase, various elements of the game will be tweaked, and numerous bugs will, inevitably, be squashed as Death Stranding 2 nears completion. With a bit of luck, this process will finish sooner rather than later, avoiding potential delays.

In January 2024, we learned that Death Stranding 2 could be set to arrive with a new name. According to a reputable leaker, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach could be the name of the next installment when it releases. Our very own Ed Smith noted that this could refer to the limbo state between life and death from the first game. The trailer shown at the 2022 Tokyo Game Awards refers to Death Stranding 2 as a “working title”.

In August 2023, Kojima revealed that the game had been completely rewritten following the coronavirus pandemic. Considering the themes of connection that play so heavily into Death Stranding’s narrative, it’s perhaps unsurprising that the experience of lockdown and living through a pandemic has further shaped the director’s approach to its sequel.

While that’s everything we know about Death Stranding 2 for the time being, you can make the wait a little easier by playing one of the best RPG games or horror games because there’s certainly something there for everyone.
