The Subdetection Unit is an overworld material, and you are unable to craft it from any other item. As of this writing, you also cannot buy this item in any shops. Here’s the item’s in-game description: “Detection units produced by Fontaine Research Institute using new models of artificed components. Its original purpose was monitoring all kinds of environmental data.”

How to get the Subdetection Unit item in Genshin Impact
This item is an overworld item found throughout Fontaine. More specifically, it’s found in the new areas of Fontaine unlocked in Version 4.1. Below, you’ll find a map showing all the locations of Subdtection Unit currently in the game.

Note, some of these locations are underwater. If the item icon has a blue mark next to it, you can find the item underwater. Additionally, some of these locations are underground. Underground locations have a small black mark next to the icon. There’s a chance HoYoverse will add more locations for the Subdetection Unit item in the future, so check back for any later additions.
How to use the Subdetection Unit item in Genshin Impact
The Subdetection Unit item is currently only used as a character enhancement material. The only character who can use the Subdetection Unit is Wriothesley, releasing in the second half of Version 4.1. Wriothesley requires the Subdetection Unit for character ascension, so you’ll need to farm these items if you want to level him up to level 90. Other characters will likely use this item in the future, so it’s a good idea to establish these items as a part of your farming route.
